TAKE NOTE: Four areas around Midrand out of power
MIDRAND – Areas affected by the power outage include Mayibuye, Phomolong, Commercia, Rabie Ridge and Austin View.
Four areas around Midrand affected by a power outage after transformers at Allendale substation tripped last night (23 October), may have electricity restored tomorrow (25 October).
According to City Power, the neutral and earth combination transformers tripped at Allandale Substation due to some transformers that were allegedly set on fire at Eskom. Areas affected include Mayibuye, Phomolong, Commercia, Rabie Ridge and Austin View.
“The fiery incident resulted in a blackout that affected the aforesaid City Power areas of supply. It is believed that the arson incident was a retaliation to a joint operation in which City Power and Ekurhuleni removed illegal connections in the same areas,” said spokesperson for City Power, Isaac Mangena.
Mangena said City Power and Eskom technicians were currently conducting an investigation to determine if further damage has been caused on supply lines, cables and other electrical equipment.
“There is a protest action in these areas inconvenienced by power loss, hence it is not easy and safe for City Power and Eskom technicians to access them. Early speculation is that Eskom may instal new transformers, cables, insulators to replace the ones ravaged by fire,” added Mangena.
Furthermore, Mangena said alternative power supply cannot be implemented at this stage as the area affected by power loss was huge. “City Power will keep affected customers updated as and when new information becomes available.”
