Parenting portal teaches road safety in Midrand
MIDRAND – Motorcars and light vehicles made the highest contributions to fatal crashes.
BabyYumYum conducted a children’s road safety awareness campaign in Midrand and visited Opti-Baby and Kids Daycare centre.
BabyYumYum is a parenting portal which has embarked on a children’s road safety awareness campaign to address the escalating road fatalities involving children.
Founder of BabyYumYum, Amanda Rogaly said they used Transport Month to raise awareness around safely transporting a baby or young child in a car.
Rogaly said, according to the Road Traffic Management Corporation Report for 2017, motorcars and light vehicles made the highest contributions to fatal crashes at 47,6 per cent and 19,7 per cent respectively.
She said these figures may contribute to the high number of passenger fatalities.
“These statistics have huge implications in terms of active contribution to road safety and with road traffic injuries coming second to homicide as the cause of death in the country according to the 2015 Bulletin of the World Health Organization,” said Rogaly.
“It’s time to take a serious look at solutions to protecting the most vulnerable of road users and the future generation – our children.”
She said the BabyYumBear mascot was used to bring home the message of road safety by handing out safety flyers and Baby-on-Board stickers at key intersections. The mascot also visited schools to promote the message of road safety at a grassroots level.

“Transport Month provides an ideal opportunity to draw attention to safe driving practices and precautions parents can implement to safeguard our children on the roads. Our aim is to use the sticker as a springboard to creating awareness of road safety, encouraging safer, considerate and more tolerant driving.”
