Ward 112 residents spread love this festive season

MIDRAND – Every child received two goodie bags, one for the day and one for Christmas Day.

Ward 112 residents gave meaning to the saying ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ when they visited children at Yenzani Children’s Home on 7 December and spoiled them with treats and gifts.

The councillor of the ward, Madeleine Hicklin, described residents as true gems in every sense of the word for their kind gesture.

The 14 children who live at the home were treated to an early Christmas, complete with presents, cake and spoils aplenty.

“The work of a ward councillor is incredibly rewarding when one has the kind of residents that I have in my ward,”said Hicklin.

“Economically, 2018 has been a hard year and there hasn’t been a lot of ‘spare cash’ to go around. Despite that, when I put a call out for assistance to buy goodies to spoil these awesome children, the outpouring of support was incredible.

“Every child got two goodie bags – one which was opened on Friday at the party, and the other which will be given to them on Christmas Day.”

Hicklin added that homeowners associations, block watch associations and street group residents also contributed toys, stationery, clothing, sweets and chocolates.

“Special mention must be made of the residents from ‘The Hood’ and the Protea, Alwyn and Deodar street groups and Gynt and Sonica S who opened their hearts and their wallets. In addition, Carlswald SuperSPAR provided a cake, and Sausage Saloon of the South prepared the lunch.

“I was totally overwhelmed by the support. I want to thank all the residents of Ward 112 who opted to assist those less fortunate than themselves. I hope you are blessed with a peace-filled festive season and a prosperous entry into 2019.

“You embody the true spirit of Christmas and the true meaning of Ubuntu in everything you do. For that, I cannot thank you enough.”
