Looters descend upon overturned truck
MIDRAND – Truck carrying eggs overturns, passersby loot and take crates full of eggs.
Passersby looted a truck transporting eggs after it overturned on the N1 North at the Allandale Road off-ramp in Midrand on 4 September.
According to the Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, “The accident took place around 7am on Wednesday [4 September] after the driver
of the truck lost control of his vehicle.
“He was driving in the right lane at 60 kilometres an hour when he overtook two vehicles that were driving slowly.”

Minnaar said the driver drove parallel to one of the vehicles. When indicating to go to the slow lane, the driver of the vehicle next to him started accelerating and driving in front of him.
“The truck driver then lost control and bumped the barricade.”
Thabang Selebela, the spokesperson of Emer-G-Med paramedics who were first at the scene, said they found the truck overturned and two patients who had suffered serious injuries were transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
The accident caused huge traffic delays and congestion, Midrand CPF member Jacqui van Loggenburg told the Midrand Reporter, she added, however, that traffic was flowing in both directions and many local authorities were on scene.
In a video, passersby can be seen looting and stealing crates of eggs. Minnaar confirmed that passersby stopped and looted the truck until officers arrived at the scene.
Later on, the truck was cleared on the side of the road by a rescue team along with the JMPD and South African Police Service.
