Arthur Mafokate freed

MIDRAND – Kwaito legend Arthur Mafokate's lawyer Daniel Nakeng shares some insight into the journey of their court case.

Arthur Mafokate was found innocent after many court appearances for allegedly hurting his then girlfriend Busisiwe ‘Cici’ Thwala.

After the court appearance on 27 August the Midrand Reporter contacted Mafokate’s lawyer to share the overall journey through the court process.

Daniel Nakeng who spoke on behalf of his client [Mafokate] said that it was one of the most difficult cases they had ever handled because of the public stature of their client.

“Mr Mafokate was humiliated for over two years, but being the dignified man he is, he remained calm and followed all due processes with humility till the end in order to prove his innocence.”

Nakeng also shared their satisfaction with the outcome, “We are extremely satisfied as we maintained all throughout the process that our client is innocent, therefore, we had to respect the judicial process till the end.”

After the court ruling, Thwala better known as Cici, made her own public statement on social media platforms saying that she hoped her criminal case’s outcome does not discourage any other women in any way too speak out for themselves, stand up for themselves, speak their truth or to fight for their justice.

“In the beginning I said I would fight from beginning till end, and this is not the end, this is not going to be our narrative as women.

“I always preach that we need to take back our power and so we will do just that, we will be heard.”

Mafokate’s lawyers confirmed that based on all facts put forward before the judiciary, it was proven that his client never committed an assault or intended to do so, thus setting him free.

According to Thwala’s lawyer Keegan Elliot, his client opened a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

In an incident which took place in 2017, the complainant, Cici, according to other media, was dragged 300 metres as she held on to the car handle of her former lover Arthur Mafokate which resulted in very bad injuries.
