Suspect arrested for stealing from school

MIDRAND – A suspect was caught in the act while trying to steal copper piping at a local school.

The Midrand police arrested a 40-year-old man for business burglary at a school in Midrand on 26 November.

Spokesperson for the Midrand Police Station Sergeant Matome Tlamela said the incident took place during school hours when the complainant, who is also the caretaker at the school, heard water running in the school bathrooms. “The caretaker went to check what might be the problem.

“Upon his arrival he tried to open the bathroom door and noticed that there was something blocking the door. He then decided to go check through the window at the back of the bathroom.”

The complainant noticed an unknown male hiding in the bathroom – he had apparently attempted to steal the copper piping from the school bathrooms. The caretaker tried to pull the man through the window and an altercation ensued.

Tlamela added that the complainant called for help and a teacher at the school managed to apprehend the suspect. The police were called to the scene and arrested the suspect who is currently detained at the Midrand Police station.
