Fight dog abandonment

MIDRAND – The Midrand SPCA is calling on the local community to report the abandoning of dogs.

The Midrand SPCA has called on the community to assist them in curbing the abandonment of dogs.

General manager of the Midrand SPCA, Pam Pretorius said they have received many cases of dogs being abandoned. She pointed to the growing cases of dumping dogs on the side of the road and highlighted hotspots such as along Olifantsfontein Road.

“The dumping of dogs all around Midrand has become a big problem,” she said. “In one case, a puppy died immediately after getting dumped on the side road after it had been run over.

“To leave an animal out like that without food or water is unacceptable. And if we catch the people who are doing this we will prosecute them.”

Pretorius added that they have also dealt with cases of people moving house and abandoning their dogs on the property.

“If you don’t want the animals, please bring them to us. Our adoptions rates are growing and we can find them a good home and give them care rather than people abandoning them.”

The Midrand SPCA are calling on the local community to keep alert and watch out for anyone abandoning dogs on the side of the road or on a property. “Please come forward with any information such as a licence plate number or identification so we can catch the perpetrators. Also, if you see a dog being abandoned, please bring the animals into us. We don’t turn any animal away.”
