Local police officers arrested a suspect for reporting a false crime on 29 January.
Spokesperson for the Midrand Police Station Sergeant Matome Tlamela said that the suspect opened a case of theft out of motor vehicle at the police station claiming that his laptop had been stolen out of his car in the Midrand area.
She explained that the investigating officer followed up on the information in the case and discovered security footage which conflicted with the suspect’s account of the theft. The suspect was then called into the station and questioned further.
Tlamela added that during the questioning, the suspect admitted that the laptop was in fact stolen in the Woodmead area, but lied about it being stolen in Midrand in order to get a case number to claim from insurance.
The suspect was arrested and charged with defeating the course of justice.
