Ebony Park local helps future models

Charlotte Mphosa saw the need to help young adults and models from her community.

Born and raised in Ebony Park, 26-year-old Mphosa has established an NGO called Charlotte Dakalo Mphosa Journey (CDM Journey). The NGO’s project ‘brand a model’ aims to groom young, talented models with enough training and skills needed to be a model.

The project was formally registered in 2014, yet the idea and the operation of the company started in 2011. At that time she was still doing her business management studies at Rosebank College in Braamfontein.

Mphosa said she fell in love with art and fashion at an early age which gave her the strength and confidence to do something in the fashion industry. “My love for fashion and art gave me the courage to start this organisation and make it about my community members.”

She was inspired by the likes of Connie Ferguson, Noni, Gasa Alek Wek and Phuti Khomo, “I am following the footsteps of those who are already in the fashion industry and I have faith that one day I will be bigger than I am right now.”

She wants to help models make it in the industry as most of them do not have the necessary help and experience to be noticed by agencies. “I will be putting more effort in the project because I took a gap year from it in 2018 until last year. I think this is the right time for me to put more attention into this organisation and help young models be discovered by other agencies.”

While Mphosa has been building a brand for herself, she has met various photographers, completed theatre projects and also became a presenter on a programme called Ngeneroundin on Midrand-Tembisa TV channel.

She currently has no sponsorship for her project and she has been applying for financial assistance with no success.
