ICYMI: IPID investigates death, allegedly as a result of Rabie Ridge police action

RABIE RIDGE – Police are alleged to have shot dead a man from Tembisa during a call-out on 7 September.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) is investigating the death of a 22-year-old man from Tembisa who was allegedly killed by Rabie Ridge police at his home on 7 September.

According to News24, the mother of the deceased contacted police to assist in containing their son who was mentally unstable and had become aggressive towards his family members.

Ipid spokesperson Ndileka Cola said they have been empowered by Ipid Act Section 28(1)(a) to investigate the death as a result of police action. “The Ipid investigators attended to the scene, which is the deceased’s home,” explained Cola.

“The preliminary investigation indicates that the deceased was fighting with his family. The family members called the police officers, as alleged, the police officers arrived at the scene and there was minimal cooperation from the deceased.”

Cola added,”It is alleged that additional police officers joined the scene. The deceased allegedly charged towards the police with a retractable knife and the police fired.”

Cola said the investigation into the matter continued.
