A man who has allegedly been defrauding community members in and around Rabie Ridge has finally been arrested.
The 34-year-old suspect who has allegedly been committing fraud and failing to pay his clients was arrested in Mayibuye on 16 September by Rabie Ridge police. This after community members outsmarted him by getting people to pose as potential clients before calling the police.
According to Rabie Ridge Police Station spokesperson, Constable Jacob Nhlongo, a complainant alleged that on 12 December last year she met a man who claimed to have a scheme to multiply money through investments.
The complainant said she heard from a neighbour that their work colleague had received returns three months after their investment.
“The complainant then got hooked and invested an undisclosed amount of money expecting to get paid in three months,” said Nhlongo.
“After three months when she called the suspect to follow up with payment, the man kept giving her excuses until later when they decided to organise a few people in the community to call him and pretend that they wanted to invest with him, to which he ended up showing [his scheme to].”
“The man is currently in custody at the Rabie Ridge Police Station and will appear at the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court soon to answer on a charge of fraud.”
Anyone who may have been a victim of fraud is urged to come and present their statements at the Rabie Ridge Police Station.
