Police are on the lookout for five suspects who terrorised the local community in Phomolong and Mayibuye on 18 October.
Spokesperson for the Rabie Ridge Police Station, Constable Jacob Nhlongo said that there were three separate incidents between 11.15pm and 12.40am involving a white Toyota Tazz which involved robbery and left two victims with gunshot wounds.
Nhlongo said that the first incident was reported at 11.15pm when the police received a complaint regarding a shooting in Phomolong. The police arrived on the scene to find a male victim who had been shot. It is alleged that there were two male and three female suspects in a white Toyota Tazz.
They approached a male and female with a firearm and robbed them of their cell phones. The male victim was shot in the upper body and the female victim was hit on the head with back of the gun. The victims were taken to the hospital for treatment.
The police then received a call at 12.30am in Phomolong. According to police, the victim had returned home and as he opened his gate to enter his driveway he noticed a white Toyota Tazz which was described to have a yellow licence plate. Five suspects approached, one brandishing a firearm. They searched the victim and took his belongings.
Nhlongo said that the suspects demanded the victim open his car bonnet. They took out the battery and poured the acid onto the ground. The reasoning for this action is still being determined by the police.
In Mayibuye, a patrolling police car was stopped by a group of residents at 12.40am who reported the same vehicle, a white Toyota Tazz, and that a local resident had been shot from it. Upon arrival on the scene, the victim had already been transported by one of their neighbours to the Tembisa Hospital for treatment. The police secured the area and found blood and two ammunition cartridges on the ground.
Nhlongo said that the Rabie Ridge police are currently investigating the incidents and no arrests have been made. The police are calling on the local community to come forward with any information regarding the suspects and the white Toyota Tazz.
