Christ Church Underwater Hockey teams win big

MIDRAND – The Christ Church Underwater Hockey club celebrated their achievements during the recent season.

Christ Church Underwater Hockey Club celebrated their achievements in the 2019/20 season at their annual club awards.

The club finished their season in March after their participation in the three-day Underwater Hockey Junior Nationals. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the club was forced to host their annual general meeting and club awards virtually on 29 October.

Chairperson of the club Stefan Kostlin said, “We were particularly proud of our Gauteng teams who were largely from [Christ Church Underwater Hockey Club] and who won gold in almost all the leagues.

“Our organising committee did a sterling job of putting on a fantastic sporting event and our coaches prepared our players for success to perfection. I am so proud of our club, our players and the incredible parents who support us.”

The awards ceremony celebrated the best and most improved players in each age group, while also announcing the players selected for the Gauteng team and those who received awards a the Underwater Hockey Junior Nationals.

The players who received awards at the Nationals were Tatenda Moyo (U13) who received best player of the tournament in her age group, and Lauria van der Walt and Gemma Muller who shared best player of the tournament in the U19 group.

The players who were awarded Gauteng half-colours included Akudzwe Joan Museva, Isabella Gore, Ivile Tom, Leatile Moleele, Jessie-Marion Bosch and Marc Hersov. Bjorn Köstlin, Matthew Bisset and Thomas Millar received full colours.

The club is excited to kick off the next season and is calling on parents and local businesses to partner with them either through sponsorship or through volunteering for the upcoming season.

• Best player – Mivuyo Mabhoza

• Most improved player – Kabongwe Simelane

U10 boys

• Best player – Jayden Nghimwena-Sauerbier

• Most improved player – Lumnko Masiko

U13 girls

• Best player – Tatenda Moyo

• Most improved player – Isabella Gore

• Most committed player – Jabahri Dowries

U13 boys

• Best player – Ethan Mitchell

• Most improved player – Luke John Pascoe

• Most committed player – Nathan Dlamini

U15 girls

• Best player – Nikita Joyce

• Most improved player – Eden Robson

• Most committed player – Sharon Millar

U15 boys

• Best player – Thomas Millar

• Most improved player – Bjorn Köstlin

• Most committed player – Thomas Millar

U19 girls

• Best player and most enthusiastic player – Abigail Dowries

• Most improved player –Cassandra Yule

• Most committed player –Abigail Dowries

U19 boys

• Best player and most enthusiastic player –Ethan Martin

• Most improved player – Matthew Bisset

• Most committed player – Joshua McKenna
