MIDRAND – This year saw a number of horrific crimes in the Midrand area.
Here is a list of some of the most horrific crimes that stunned local residents.
Three wounded victims and two dead suspects in Olievenhoutbosch robbery
The local community took matters into their own hands following an armed robbery at an Olievenhoutbosch shopping centre. Four suspects entered a store on 24 September and began shooting at the ceiling before proceeding to demand cigarettes and money from the store keeper. Spokesperson for the provincial police Captain Kay Makhubele said that the suspects allegedly shot a security guard working at the store, a woman and a girl. The suspects were approached by the local community which led to two suspects fleeing the scene and the two other suspects were allegedly beaten to death. The police opened a case of murder, attempted murder and armed robbery.
One victim dead following terrifying armed robbery in Kyalami
The incident occurred on 7 January on the corner of Maple and Main roads when the victim was stopped. Provincial spokesperson for the police, Brigadier Mathapelo Peters said, “Two men allegedly stormed the couple’s vehicle and attempted to get inside the Nissan X-Trail, which then allegedly rolled back downhill and landed in a ditch.”
Peters added that shots were allegedly fired from the suspects’ vehicle and the female driver was wounded in the upper body and her husband killed. The police opened a case of armed robbery and attempted murder.

Police search for a security guard who allegedly stole R4 million
The Police and SBV Securities called on the local community for information on the whereabouts of security guard Bathobile Mlangeni who has been linked to the theft of R4 million in an SBV Services collection facility at a mall in Midrand. The search for Mlangeni is still ongoing as she hasn’t been seen since the incident occurred.

Police launch manhunt after two women killed in Limpopo
The police arrested five suspects who were linked to the murder of two Midrand businesswomen, shot in Limpopo while viewing rental properties on 10 October. Following a extensive manhunt, the suspects including the husband of one of the victims, were apprehended and charged with murder. The police are currently investigating the issue and the suspects are currently in court.
Victim shot and robbed of luxury watch in Kyalami
A victim was shot and injured during an armed robbery on New Road in Kyalami on 23 February. The incident occurred at 4pm when the victim was driving from a shopping mall in Kyalami. As she approached the corner of New and Sixth roads, she was approached by two suspects. One suspect smashed the passenger door window with a hammer while the other smashed the driver’s window. They allegedly grabbed the victim’s left arm and removed a Rolex watch, two gold bracelets and a gold ring on her finger. During the robbery, the suspects fired two shots, injuring the victim who was later rushed to the nearest hospital.
