A local non-profit bakery has appealed to the community for help in fixing their ovens and mixers so they can continue serving the community.

Founder of the Tswelelane Bakery Cooperative, Nkwe Semenya explained that the bakery’s equipment broke down after apparently being affected by faulty and failing electricity at the beginning of last year. Since its establishment in 2007, the Ivory Park bakery has been feeding many in the community and helps create jobs.

The bakery runs a drop-in centre for learners to come in and eat after school and they also cook meals on Saturdays for children of disadvantaged families. “After our equipment broke down we became stuck, we still do not have the funds to fix our machines because they were exhausted by the initiatives we run,” Semenya said.

“Now, our oven needs [repairs of] R20 000 with another R20 000 which will assist to fix our other equipment like mixers and so forth. Even if we can get a volunteer engineer to help us fix our machinery we would appreciate that.

We would also like to ask for help in the form of start-up stock so we can start operations.” She concluded, “We would also like to ask for donations of wheelchairs and school shoes as well because as we usually donate those over Easter to our children.”
