The programme aims to prepare the learners for schooling beyond the primary education level as well as to help steer them towards their desired careers.

It consists of workshops held once every school term and is led by deputy principal Ferhana Raban. Raban is also a youth development leader and speaker working in collaboration with Channel Islam International Youth Foundation.

Raban said she decided to hold the workshop for her learners to prepare them for high school, and tell them about the importance of leadership while also incorporating the Islamic text as the school is an Islamic school.

“The workshop focused on leadership in service to other people, we discussed servant leadership and transformational leadership roles,” she explained.

“However, it was not just about that sort of leadership. It was about leadership for oneself and what one could do to lead themselves because if they cannot lead themselves they cannot be good leaders.”

Raban said the learners had to channel all the energy and knowledge acquired in the workshop towards their goals and what it was they wanted to achieve for themselves. Following this, the learners created vision boards.

“The vision boards will be used by the learners to remind themselves of their goals. These are simple yet important skills that we need to teach our children, these things are not in the curriculum but they can shape the adult that the learners will become. More confident students become confident learners.”

Grade 6 learner Aadil Manjoo shared his experience on how the workshop changed his thinking. “I was able to understand my own personality and how to find out my occupation, whether if I should be a leader or not, am I a natural-born leader or should I develop my leadership skills,” he said.

Raban said the workshops would be held every term to help the learners become the leaders they want to be.
