The Midrand police have urged community members to beware of spikes covered in plastic on the roads.
Spokesperson for the Midrand Police Station Constable Eliot Mabulane told the Midrand Reporter on 11 June that criminals have begun using spikes on the roads to rob motorists.
He explained that the suspects went around placing the spikes on the roads then they covered them with black plastic bags and rocks on top so the plastic does not move.
“They do this to make your tyre flat so that they can rob you. A similar incident happened in Glen Austin, Midrand not so long ago. However, they did not succeed and for that we would like to thank the Midrand Community Policing Forum for their assistance and swift response in helping the victim.
“Motorists are urged not to drive on top of any objects on the road, especially at night when driving around places where there are not a lot of people. Avoid using routes which are dark and have bushes besides them while driving home, rather use roads which are busy like main roads.”
Mabulane concluded that people should also refrain from using their cellphones while driving as they will not be able to see everything happening around them or in front of them. “We urge motorists to be extra careful.”
