Midrand police have urged community members to be vigilant of hijackers who follow motorists home.
Sergeant Thabiso Selowa, spokesperson for Midrand Police Station, told Midrand Reporter on 8 June that there had been a few cases of people being hijacked at the gates of their homes or complexes.
She said hijackers would follow motorists home, either from work or shopping centres and learn their routines. After the suspects become familiar with motorists’ routines, they hijack the victims while they wait for their gates to open or get out their vehicles to open their gates.
“We have seen trends, and most of these incidents usually take place around 7.30am in the morning and 3pm. Some of these cases take place at night. Our last reported case was between 10pm and 11pm,” she added.
“Should you notice something suspicious like somebody following you around, stop at your nearest petrol station and call the police on this number 011 347 1600, our community alert hijacking number, or the following sector vehicle numbers to get a quick response.”
