Local non-profit organisation Paws R Us needs a new home
MIDRAND – Paws R Us is looking for any agents or property developers who might have unused pieces of land that they could either rent or use.
Paws R Us, a local non-profit organisation, called on businesses and locals to assist them with land that they could use for their new home.
The organisation focuses on the rescue, safe haven, networking and rehoming of unwanted, abandoned and surrendered dogs.

Co-director, Tanya Nel said they needed a new place suitable to accommodate dogs, a property that was zoned for agriculture so they could build on it and have the assurance that they could stay there for a long time. She said, “We prefer to be in the Midrand area, it is convenient and is in between Pretoria and Johannesburg. There are already a lot of shelters in both Pretoria and Johannesburg so we are nicely situated in terms of location.”
Nel mentioned that there were a few issues with their current plot, one of which was that it was becoming a health hazard. She said the property was infested with hookworms and parasites to a point where it was becoming unmanageable.
She added that their monthly rent for the two-hectare property was about R30 000 which included water and electricity as well as maintenance. Nel said their wage bill was about R30 000 per month, and dog food and overheads were between R120 000 to R150 000 per month.
“So we are looking for any agents or property developers who might have unused pieces of land that they would let us either rent or use. Something that is not busy being zoned for development because we cannot move temporarily.
“You do not just pick up 150 dogs and move them somewhere. We have to build kennels, drainage and so forth.”
Nel concluded that they have set a deadline to move by the end of October this year as they did not want to take in more dogs to reduced the load when they moved.
