Youngster rewarded for her Maths in Life art portrait

MIDRAND – Arya Badal, Grade 9 learner at Reddford House Blue Hills was awarded as a finalist for the GMMDC National MathArt Competition.

A learner from Reddford House Blue Hills was chosen as a finalist in an art competition for her outstanding Maths is Life portrait.

Arya Badal took part in this year’s virtual Nelson Mandela University’s Govan Mbeki Mathematics Development Centre’s National MathArt Competition. According to www.mathart.co.za, the competition was a South Africa Steam initiative aimed to promote innovation and creative problem-solving skills among learners nationwide.

Learners were presented with the challenge of interpreting an equation and asked to create an artwork that visually connects mathematics and this year’s theme – beautiful mathematics.

The Grade 9 learner said it was a bit challenging to come up with an idea for the art piece at first.

She included a lot of geometric elements into the artwork. “Using things like the golden ratio and other elements to create the artwork, for instance, I used the golden ratio mask to create the face. If you look at the artwork there is a face in the middle, the sun around it, and besides the lady is a city. Below there are numbers going into the lady’s heart,” she added.

Arya said she felt pretty good and happy that she managed to get her art to Port Elizabeth.

Her art coach, Ladine Joubert, said Arya was naturally talented. “It is rare to find a learner that is naturally talented and able to visualise things creatively without relying on second-hand information, plagiarising or looking at other images,” Joubert said. She concluded, “She is a genius in that regard.”
