Midrand SPCA highlights the plight of animals

MIDRAND – Brenda Lucas, Midrand SPCA chairperson, has pleaded with community members to rather bring their animals to the society, no matter their condition, instead of dumping them.

The Midrand SPCA recently highlighted the suffering of animals that are dumped.

Brenda Lucas, chairperson for the Midrand SPCA, said to this day they struggled to grasp why people dumped animals to starve and fend for themselves when the SPCA had an open-door policy for any unwanted animals

She added that not so long ago, two dogs were dumped on a busy road only metres away from their society.

“Unfortunately, one of the dogs managed to run off and we could not catch it. The other was taken into our society but had a severe tick-bite fever. It was emaciated and in respiratory distress,” she explained.

Sadly, she said, the kindest thing they could do, was to humanly put the dog down to end its suffering.

Lucas added that their team was very upset about the situation, especially because one of the two dogs were still out there.

“Who knows what kind of suffering it has had to endure and whether it is also in such a poor condition and in desperate need of medical treatment,” she added.

Lucas pleaded with community members to not dump any unwanted animals. She added that they have never and will never turn away any animal, no matter the circumstances or condition.

“We will not judge if you cannot care for your animals – please just bring them to us so that they do not have to suffer. They will not survive on their own,” she concluded.
