Resident raises frustrations about the closure of the post offices
MIDRAND – Johan Kruger, communications manager for the South African Post Office said that they were in talks with the Halfway House Post Office landlords, Boulder Shopping Centre to reopen the facility.
A Midrand community member has voiced his frustrations after coming to realise that none of the Post Offices in Midrand were operating.
Chris Foley, who visited the Halfway House Post Office located at the Boulders Shopping Centre, said that after his visit to that post office, he found a notice saying that they were closed until further notice.
“It appears that the Crowthorne Post Office closed approximately nine months ago, the notice on the door said the office was closed until further notice as well,” Foley said.
He said that he saw a similar notice at the Randjiesfontein Post Office in Capital Park which closed about three months ago.
He added that the three offices were the only ones in Midrand catering for car licence renewal and other postal affairs with the head branch being the Halfway House Office.
South African Post Office spokesperson, Johan Kruger, said that it should be noted that the Halfway House branch was temporarily closed on 31 August 2021 due to a rental dispute.
He said the intention was to re-open it as soon as possible.
“The [SA] Post Office has been experiencing financial constraints in the past year as a result of the Covid pandemic and the economic downturn, but its revenue is now at a much better level,” he explained.
Kruger added that the post office was in talks with the landlord to re-open the branch.
After reaching out to the landlord (Boulders Shopping Centre) to give clarity as to why they would not reopen the doors to the office, the shopping centre indicated, “As a policy, we do not comment on lease agreements entered with tenants.”
