Local food donor is on a quest to reach more people
MIDRAND – Asa Karriem has called on community members and business people to help her donate more food parcels to help the needy.
Inspired by alleviating poverty and living in a better community, Midrand resident Asa Karriem continues to help those less fortunate, by handing out food parcels to them where possible.
Karriem recently hit the streets of Carlswald and Vorna Valley to hand out much-needed food parcels to hawkers and unemployed people in the area.
She said the parcels contained maize meal, samp, beef, chicken, ox liver, onions, cabbages, sweet potato, carrots, instant noodles, sweets, and other food items.
She has taken on this mammoth task, with the support of her family. Karriem added that she has thought about cooking and handing out prepared meals as that would be less costly for her, however, those meals would be for one day. “If you give them food parcels they can eat for two to three days. I had to consider the families, the mothers with their children at home who are hungry, that became my main concern.

“And because of all the hunger and pain these people I come across were experiencing, that was the only way to assist.”
Karriem thanked the community members who have been assisting her by donating money for the groceries. She also urged companies and people who are able to, to contribute to the cause.
“Right now I have two sewing machines, I want to teach these ladies I come across how to sow. I will also be collecting clothing and giving them each a bundle to sell and make money as well, so they can sustain themselves because donations alone will not help.”
