Paws and Boots, a company involved in outdoor adventure for dogs and their owners, recently launch the Country Dog Park in Glen Austin on November 20.

The launch of the park, started by Heather Whitfield owner of a veterinary physiotherapy practice and dog training school, also had several vendors selling food at the country market.
Whitfield said, “The park is secure, has 3km, 5km and 10km nature trails. On the day of the launch we had a dog walk with almost 300 dogs enjoying the nature trails with the human companions and an obstacle course. Plenty of hampers and vouchers were given away to various people who have registered on the day.”

She said the park aimed to stimulate the dogs mentally and physically in a safe outdoor environment. She added due to the Covid-19 challenges and restrictions in the past two years, all these uncertainties played havoc on people and their pets.

Whitfield advised dog owners to ensure that exercise programmes took the pet’s age, health, fitness and energy levels into consideration. “Start slow and use a lot of positive reinforcement to make the exercise fun and exciting.”

Rules for the park include:

  • On the nature walking trails, all dogs must be on a lead. Dogs in the confidence-building and obstacle area may be off lead.
  • As this is not a usual dog park, we encourage the ‘pet parents’ to actively get involved with the dogs and encourage them to negotiate the obstacles in a fun and positive manner.
  • Strictly no children or adults allowed on and off the obstacles.
