ARN Security rescues a stray puppy being sold on the streets
MIDRAND — Keeping a stray animal or selling it to someone else, is regarded as theft and people may face criminal charges even if their intentions were well-intended.
Midrand SPCA was called at about 16:50 on January 5 by alert security officers of ARN Security who were concerned about a man selling a puppy on a busy roadside.
Midrand SPCA general manager inspector Pam Pretorius chatted to the ARN Security team telephonically and asked them if the gentleman would hand the puppy over to them to take to a place of safekeeping.
The officers told Pretorius that the puppy was allegedly found by a person as a stray, and this person gave the animal to the man who was selling the puppy as payment for services he had rendered to the person.
The man was therefore trying to sell the puppy to recover the funds that he was not paid. The SPCA said, “We wish to remind the public that the municipal bylaws state that all stray animals are to be handed over to the municipal pound, the Midrand SPCA. “Keeping a stray animal or selling it to someone else is regarded as theft and people may face criminal charges even if their intentions were well-intended. “We ask that people not buy animals on the side of the road.
While you may be trying to save the life of one animal, buying these animals only encourages [people] to breed more [animals], steal more, and promote cruelty towards animals.” The SPCA thanked the officers for coming to the aid of the puppy and for transporting it safely to Midrand SPCA.
