Sector Crime Forum 3 invites the community to crime curbing meeting

NOORDWYK – Marvin Maphiri, chairperson for the Sector Crime Forum 3 said the meeting was about proposing access control measures in Noordwyk to the community members as a means to stop crime.

Midrand’s Sector 3 Crime Forum has called on residents to attend an access-control meeting to curb crime on February 26 at Noordwyk Park.

Chairperson of the forum Marvin Maphiri explained that the meeting would take place from 09:00 to 11:00 to discuss how people can enter and exit Noordwyk.

He said that the meeting was prompted by the fact that Noordwyk was a high-crime suburb based on crime statistics from the past two to three years.

“The area was a bit vulnerable, anyone can travel on the streets unguarded. The number of street robberies and unmarked vehicles reported to be moving around our streets committing crimes, both petty and serious, have become a problem.

“Therefore as the CPF we want to recommend to the community that some of the streets be closed off, others permanently and others temporarily closed, as part of mitigating crime.”

The Midrand Reporter followed up with the spokesperson of the Midrand Police Station to confirm these claims. Constable Eliot Mabulane, however, stated that that was not the case anymore. He added that Halfway House, Glen Austin, President Park, and Vorna Valley were the areas currently experiencing trends of street robberies.

Maphiri said they will be discussing a funding model with the community, inviting potential funders, local security companies, and the local homeowners’ associations to come on board and assist with funding the infrastructure.

“We would like to have measures in place to regulate access into our suburbs which will help identify residents and non-residents as well as have rules both can comply with such as being registered to enter suburbs as part of fighting crime.

“We are hoping to get the residents to propose streets they want to have closed off so we can form a petition and have it signed by all residents so that an application can be lodged with the municipality.”
