At about 19:47 on May 11, Ria Sebetsa Security received calls from the public informing them of a shooting incident at a shopping centre in Kyalami, stating that a man had been shot.
The Ria Sebetsa Tactical Units were immediately dispatched to the scene and Midrand police and Netcare 911 were contacted. Danny Maduray, CEO of Ria Sebetsa, said a response officer found a man of the age of about 40 lying on the ground who had been shot and was still alive.
It is alleged that five armed male suspects entered the centre through a hole in the palisade fencing adjacent to the eastern side of the shopping centre. One of the suspects held the guard hostage at gunpoint while the other four suspects robbed a woman of her handbag on the stairs of one of the restaurants.
“The lady started screaming for help when she saw her boyfriend proceeding down the stairs of the restaurant and that is when the suspects opened fire,” explained Maduray. “Approximately five shots were fired, some of which hit the boyfriend.”
Apparently, the woman and her boyfriend were proceeding to have dinner at the restaurant when the incident occurred. The suspects fled the scene via the hole in the palisade fence.
The victim was taken to Netcare 911 Sunninghill hospital by Netcare 911. The police arrived on the scene after the victim had already been transported to the hospital.
Midrand police spokesperson Constable Eliot Mabulane confirmed that all five suspects were still at large and a case of attempted murder had been opened.
“The trio task team has initiated the tracing of the suspects with the team of detectives,” Mabulane said.
