Talented siblings make a mark in different sports codes

Nokuphila Primary School in President Park, Midrand, is ecstatic that two of their former learners are making an impact in their sports careers.

Former Nokuphila Primary School learners and current alumni are making big strides in their various sport careers.

The President Park-based school is Love Trust’s project which was founded in 2009.

Silas Pillay, director of academics from Love Trust, said they believe education and sport are mutually beneficial and schools that can help learners leverage both tend to have happier, healthier, and better-rounded students.

Tshwarelo (15) and Lesego Chiloane (16) from Ivory Park will embark on their journey of living their dreams in netball and football, respectively.

Now a Grade 10 learner at Eqinisweni Secondary School, Tshwarelo will soon be taking part in the regional netball trials. She plays guard attack although she feels confident in playing any position on the field.

“I have gained a lot of leadership skills through playing netball. I have also learnt that determination and hard work yield positive results in one’s life, but beyond that I have made good friends within the sport.”

She believes that playing sport has given her a platform to shine and showcase her talents, besides making her a fit and healthy learner.

Lesego is a Grade 9 learner at Tsosoloso ya Africa Secondary School in Ebony Park and has been selected to train with the Mamelodi Sundowns’ U17 soccer team as a defender.

Similar to his sister, his sport has provided him with access to new places, environments, and people.

Pillay said Lesego will soon be testing his mettle against other aspiring soccer players, many of whom are older than him, for a spot in the U19 Sundowns team.

“By contrast, Tshwarelo and Lesego thank Nokuphila, their former primary school, for grooming them into the certified athletes they are and for the love and support they gave them during their tuition there, such as donating sporting kit and other equipment,” said Pillay.
