JRA says Joburg Water must fix hole

Bridget Theunissen says all she wants is to see the trench fixed because JRA and JW only promise but no action.

After apparently being sent from pillar to post by Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and Joburg Water (JW), Noordwyk resident Bridget Theunissen is fuming about a big hole outside her home.

Theunissen who has lived in Summerset Estate since 2005, said the hole was dug in December 2020 by JW when they were fixing a leaking water pipe.

“I just want whoever is responsible to fix this mess. Last year, I spent my festive season with this bad trench which would generate a bad smell and [attract] mosquitos around it. I pay my rates monthly but the service delivery is very poor to say the least,” said Theunissen.

Estate manager Rhona Rakow had also contacted the two utilities to attend to the problem but to no avail.

MMC Funzela Ngobeni’s spokesperson Olebogeng Molathlwa said, “The trench in question was dug by Joburg Water in order to repair a leaking pipe. As such, Joburg Water will have to send a team to restore the surface to its original condition.”

JW spokesperson Seipati Nyawaza acknowledged Midrand Reporter’s query on July 7 but only responded on July 13. “Johannesburg Water was recently notified of the outstanding reinstatement by JRA, as the estate was directing it’s enquiries to JRA. We have assigned a team and the reinstatement will be concluded tomorrow, July 14.”
