Sector 3 CPF recover cable theft in Blue Hills Ext

Sector 3 Crime Forum chairperson Marvin Maphiri adamant having access control in some entrances and exists could help curb cable theft and other crime activities.

While members of Sector 3 Crime Forum were patrolling in Blue Hills, at about 20:30 two men were seen carrying Eskom cables behind a petrol station along the R55 on July 13.

Sector chairperson Marvin Maphiri said the patrollers gave chase but the men dropped the cables and disappeared into the night.

“We searched [the veld] and while walking in long grass some of our patrollers sustained injuries after falling into a pit [dug to steal cables]. We wish them a speedy recovery and extend our appreciation for their zeal and zest towards community work,” said Maphiri.
He said they informed Eskom and Midrand police of the cable theft site and the recovered cables were booked in at Midrand Police Station.

Maphiri said it was becoming clear that Eskom’s strategy to combat cable theft was not working, and the forum believed that to curb crime activities in the area, temporary and permanent road closures would need to be implemented.
