Local activist wins continental accolade, nominated for provincial award

Amanda Nomnqa says winning the upcoming 8th Annual Vita Basadi Award will be a big moment for her as she always wants to bag each accolade she is nominated for.

Founder of non-profit organisation, SheIsBrave Amanda Nomnqa hopes her NPO’s efforts to fight illiteracy and skills development will one day become a success.

Nomnqa (25) was recently bestowed with the coveted Forbes Women Africa Young Achievers Award in March 2022.

Again, she has recently been nominated for the 8th Annual Vita Basadi Awards to be held on August 31 by the Gauteng Legislature.

The Ivory Park-born young leader says SheIsBrave aims at addressing the lack of empowerment and mentorship through skills development, safe spaces, educational programmes and empowerment events,

The multi-talented community activist also wears an entrepreneurial hat as she runs her own digital branding company.

“Amanda is passionate and zealous – who seeks to see an urgent need for change in disadvantaged communities. She is also a mentor and the 2022 Face of Mall of Tembisa working close with the CSI project of the mall to uplift communities,” Nomnqa describe herself.

She now takes us through her journey of how her community work all began.

Nomnqa said it all started when she was still in primary school, being a prefect at school and class representative later in her high school days.
After completing her Matric in 2014 from Eqinisweni Secondary School, Nomnqa did not know which career path to pursue. She eventually went to nursing and Information Technology.
Varsity did not change her. In higher education, she was in the school representative team and at varsity, she was the president because she’s goal-driven and wants to make a difference by seeing positive results through her own sweat – ‘my voice and action’.

“I was that girl that placed her eggs in many baskets. I was not sure of the spaces I wanted to occupy besides knowing that I want to work with people and bring about change. I wanted to be the hope for others until I strongly found my feet in corporate governance and the NGO sector space most fulfilling to work on the ground and bring hope and opportunities for others.”

Nomnqa said SheIsBrave was running a spelling bee coaching programme because, “We have introduced this programme to empower, build confidence and activate the soft skills in the young girls and boys. We will be hosting the big competition on August 27, 2022, in collaboration with the Department of Arts and& Culture and Recreation, which we are excited about.”

Nomnqa has been nominated for various prestigious awards and won some, including Future African Leaders, South Africa Community Changer, 100 Shining Star and Forbes Woman Africa Young Achiever Award.
