Bakkie burned beyond recognition

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department(JMPD) provides safety tips to ensure your car is roadworthy.

An Opel Corsa bakkie caught fire in Halfway House near Boulders Shopping Centre at around 17:20. While the cause of the fire on June 7 is not known, it is alleged that the driver took her car to a mechanic to have a radio installed earlier and when it was returned the believes the wires were faulty.

Emergency Management Service spokesperson, Xolile Khumalo said no one was hurt.

The driver was saved by community members as they alerted her to the leaking car. According to eyewitness Makobe Makgale, the fire started while she was still driving. They waved and hooted to alert her to the danger.

EMS responded to the incident to stop the fire.

Emergency Management Service (EMS) arrived to assist with extinguishing the fire now engulfed in flames.

The cause of the fire is still unknown at this stage.

EMS spokesperson Xolile Khumalo said, “Fortunately, the driver stepped out of the car before the vehicle caught fire, and no one was injured.”
“The fire and rescue service extinguished the fire before it could spread to the surrounding areas,” added Khumalo.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said it is important for motorists to ensure that their vehicle is in a roadworthy condition by doing simple vehicle maintenance and pre-trip inspections.

A car moved downhill until it made it stop and burned.

Safety tips to ensure a car is roadworthy:

  • Check the engine oil level and quality. If it is low, or dirty it needs to be changed.
  • Check fluids in your car, including the coolant, power steering fluid, and brake fluid levels.
  • Make sure you have the right oil in your car and that it is the correct type of oil for your car.
  • Check the condition of your tyres as it is important for safety and legal reasons.
  • Ensure that all lights are working properly. The headlights allow you to see in the dark and taillights help other drivers to see your car from behind.
  • Check that your brakes are in good condition before embarking on a journey.
  • The speedometer and other odometers should be in working condition, and all seatbelts must be operational.
  • There should be no cracks on the windscreen. All windows designed to open and close should be operational.
  • Windscreen wipers should be in good order and operational
