JRA’s ongoing programme to fix the city’s roads.

JRA spokesperson said a budget has been allocated to help to resurface Joburg’s roads through the JRA’s City-wide Road Resurfacing Programme.

According to the spokesperson for the Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA), Bertha Peters-Scheepers, Johannesburg’s roads are designed like other South African roads and have a 25-year lifespan. Regular road maintenance such as pothole patching, crack sealing, and resurfacing ensures that the lifespan of roads is extended.

JRA resurfaced 15th road on 30 June, in Randjespark.

The JRA introduced a project to resurface roads around Region A and to maintain the road as factors such as overloading of heavy vehicles, the huge quantity of vehicles that use the roads, theft, and vandalism damage the road infrastructure.

“Natural elements like rains, heat from the sun, and the recent scourge of illegal mining are contributing factors to the deterioration of JRA roads and accompanying road infrastructures,” Peters-Scheepers said.

To determine priority road resurfacing, JRA conducts regular Visual Condition Assessments (VCA) to determine the condition of the city’s road network (13 599 km of surfaced and unsurfaced roads. Surfaced roads make up 12 430.47 km of the City’s Road network and the remainder are unsurfaced).

Peters-Scheepers said JRA follows a structured approach to road management and VCA informs the entity’s response- which prioritises the preservation of existing road infrastructure, keeping it in good condition and not allowing it to deteriorate to a poor condition.

“Our response plan includes proactive maintenance, including pothole repairs and cracks sealing as well as roads resurfacing,” said Peters-Scheepers.

In conclusion, Peters-Scheepers said road resurfacing is an ongoing programme of works and forms part of the city’s continued commitment to investing in and improving the road network of the City of Johannesburg.
