Noordwyk residents urged to sign petition for crash-plagued Liebenberg Road
JRA spokesperson Bertha Peters Scheepers says it should be noted that currently there are two standard speedbumps on Liebenberg Road.
In a bid to receive traffic-calming measures, ward 112 committee member Sipho Dibakwane, will be spearheading a petition.
Dibakwane will be at Noordwyk Shopping Centre from 9:00 to 12:00 on November 11. He said the increase in accidents on Liebenburg Road in Noordwyk is a concern.
He said the lack of traffic calming measures on the road was one of the causes of road carnages. There was yet another accident on November 2 involving a Renault Kwid and Toyota Corolla.
In an email sent to the Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) by Dibakwane, seen by the paper, he said they would request traffic calming measures on Liebenberg Road and various entrance and exit points in their ward.
“This will assist in reducing the rate of accidents on Liebenberg Road and other streets. The measures would also assist in slowing down the getaway vehicles of criminals that rob our houses and ordinary residents on the streets. The traffic light at the corner of Olifantsfontein and Lever roads is defective. This is very dangerous and exposes residents to potential accidents,” said Dibakwane.
He said potholes along George Road remain unresolved and it has, allegedly, been 10 months since he first reported it to the agency.
JRA spokesperson Bertha Peters Scheepers said potholes along George Road will be attended to by November 8. She said the community is required to submit a formal petition to the Office of Speaker before the JRA can consider the installation of any additional traffic calming measures along the road.
“The traffic light at the corner of Lever and Olifantsfontein roads falls under Gauteng province’s jurisdiction. Our colleagues from the province will be able to assist in fixing the intersection. Liebenberg is classified as a class four local collector road suitable for the installation of low-profile speedbumps or raised pedestrian crossings. It should be noted that currently there are two standard speedbumps on Liebenberg between Baobab and Karee streets”.
Peters Scheepers concluded that once they have received a copy of the petition from the Office of the Speaker, the Traffic Engineering Unit will identify potential locations for additional traffic calming measures and submit a report to the petition committee for approval.
