Glen Austin High inter-house athletics strongly contested

The Glen Austin High School inter-house athletics were fiercely contested by the upcoming athletes.

The school’s sports ground was packed to the rafters on February 2 when the learners competed in various sporting codes. Learners cheered their team – which was made up of four houses – Eagles, Cheaters, Sharks, and Elephants.

Sports coordinator at the school, Temba Mhlafuna said the Eagles house were victorious on the day with a collective points accumulation of 187.

They were followed by Cheaters (151), Sharks (104) and Elephants (98). Mhlafuna said he was pleased that each house and its athletes put in a great effort and competition was close throughout the 100m, and relay races.

“The top athletes from number one to three will proceed to represent the school at the cluster competition on February 9. We have placed them according to their rankings after the competitions starting with number 14 together with their points.”

He said the school also acknowledged the captains and vice captains of the houses, having started off the year with great spirit and camaraderie.

“We would like to wish all the athletes well. As the school, we hope they will present us well and progress to the provincial level. They will get all the support they need from us. This is a great competition because some of the top South African athletes started their journey through inter-house athletics.”

The athlete who does well at the clusters will then qualify to compete against other Midrand schools. Winners will then proceed to a provincial level where they will lock horns with schools across Gauteng.

If they do well, then they will have a chance to go as far as the nationals.
