Midrand Striders Athletics Clubs’ Ntshengedzeni Masupa wins Om Die Dam Marathon

Ntshengedzeni Masupa won the age category 50-59 with a time of 03:26:48 at the Om Die Dam Ultra Marathon.

Despite the blazing sun on March 16, runners of the Midrand Striders Athletics Club fearlessly braved the scorching heat and participated in the Trojan Om Die Dam Ultra Marathon in Hartbeespoort.

The race is considered the biggest inland ultra-marathon in South Africa, offering a 50km ultra-marathon and an 8km fun run.

It has become one of the most popular ultra-marathons in South Africa since its inception in 1991. The race’s scenic route is highly appreciated by runners.

The women’s race was won by Gerda Steyn, the current Comrades champion from Phantane Athletic Club, in a time of 03:16:16. Midrand Striders’ runner Ntshengedzeni Masupa won the 50–59 age category in a time of 03:26:48.

March is typically a busy month for runners, with many of them participating in high-mileage events such as the Two Oceans Marathon in Cape Town and the upcoming Comrades Marathon.

Mary Chivers, one of the Striders, shared her experience of the race and stated that it was a tough day at Om Die Dam.

“As expected it was an extremely hot day with the temperature rising to 34 degrees in the second part of the race,” said Chivers.

“Thanks to the coordination from the race organisers who made sure the water points were well stocked. We also had great support from the community who came out with water sprinklers to keep us cool.”

Chivers concluded the race is one of her favourite ultra-marathons on the race calendar.
