Midrand SPCA swift action saves an innocent life from a horrific death

Midrand SPCA's swift action saves an innocent life from a horrific death.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) strongly condemns animal cruelty and inhumane treatment of animals.

It is the responsibility of society to protect innocent lives, including animals, and to take immediate action against any such acts.

As a result, the Midrand SPCA continued to show its advocacy against animal cruelty on March 17 as the society’s inspector Jerry Seemise received a distressing call from a resident named Lettie-Pana Selelane.

Selelane reported that a stray dog had wandered into someone’s home in an informal settlement and was in danger.

Disturbingly, the residents believed that the dog was a victim of witchcraft and needed to be burnt.

The dog was covered in coarse salt and sprinkled with anointed water, which is a ‘cruel and inhumane act’, according to the Midrand SPCA general manager Pam Pretorius.

The community believed that if the dog did not return to its original sender, it would be burnt to death.

Fortunately, Selelane managed to convince the residents to stop and call the SPCA. Inspector Seemise responded immediately to her call, and the pup was rescued and brought into the SPCA’s care.

Pretorius emphasised that such acts of cruelty are unacceptable, and the community needs to be educated on the importance of treating animals with respect and kindness.

“Education plays a vital role in uplifting our society and animals for the betterment and treatment of our sentient beings. By working alongside our communities and community leaders, we aim to educate on the humane treatment of animals in all instances while maintaining a respectful stance on cultural beliefs,” said Pretorius.

The SPCA requests that if any member of the public witnesses or becomes aware of such situations, they contact their local SPCA for immediate intervention.

“We thank Selelane for looking out for this innocent pup, and we are grateful for Inspector Seemise’s swift action. We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that animals are treated with the respect, care, and dignity they deserve.”
