MEC Diale-Tlabela reopens southbound section of Winnie Mandela Drive construction project

MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela said upon completion, Winnie Mandela Drive will enable commuters to travel directly from Midrand and Fourways to Pretoria seamlessly.

Motorists using the busy Winnie Mandela Drive can finally breathe a sigh of relief as one lane of the southbound stretch was officially opened by the Gauteng MEC for Transport and Logistics Kedibone Diale-Tlabela.

This took place on May 9 when she conducted an oversight visit to the ongoing reconstruction project of Winnie Mandela Drive (K46) between Midrand and Fourways.

Diale-Tlabela officially reopened the southbound section of the road connecting the N1 and N14 highways which will alleviate congestion in the area.
She said this reopening comes as the comprehensive upgrade of the 7km stretch nears completion at the cost of more than R4m.

“The road plays a crucial role in linking Gauteng, underscoring its social significance, economic impact, and facilitation of traffic flow from Pretoria to Sandton via Diepsloot. Upon completion, this artery will enable commuters to travel directly from Midrand and Fourways to Pretoria via the Winnie Mandela Drive route,” added Diale-Tlabela.

Diale-Tlabela said the upgrade had been a catalyst for several planned mixed-use developments along the route, including within Steyn City, which is expected to spur job creation and bolster Gauteng’s economy.

“This initiative aligns with our vision of bringing essential services closer to residents and demonstrating improved service delivery. The K46 Phase 2 project stands as a testament to our commitment to enhancing the quality of life of the people of Gauteng.”
She concluded she was delighted that the K46 would be completed in record time.
