Midrand crime statistics paint a scary picture of safety and security
With the police station grappling with a rising tide of driving under the influence arrests and various serious crimes, it is evident that both law enforcement and residents must work collaboratively to address these issues.
It’s a grim outlook for the Midrand community. The first quarter of the 2024/25 financial year crime stats revealed alarming trends in Gauteng, particularly in Midrand.
According to the South African police crime statistics, the area has witnessed a significant uptick in arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Midrand Police Station has recorded a troubling increase in arrests for driving under the influence, jumping to 224 from last year’s 182 – a staggering 23.1% rise.
This statistic positions Midrand as the number one provincially and nationally for such arrests.
While arrests for driving under the influence have surged, overall community-reported serious crimes have also made headlines.
Although serious crimes decreased slightly by 7.9% (1 732 last year to 1 596), Midrand continues to rank high, 13th nationally and fifth provincially.

The statistics for common robbery and robbery with aggravating circumstances paint a mixed picture. Common robbery has risen by 2.8%, while the more serious form of robbery has decreased by 13.3%.
Moreover, while trio crimes and carjacking rates remain high, they have shown signs of decline, with an 11% drop in trio crimes, and 17 fewer counts of carjacking.
Truck hijacking remains a significant concern, ranked within the top 10 nationally and provincially, with a slight increase of four counts compared to the previous year.
Additionally, while crimes such as kidnapping, burglary at non-residential premises, and theft from vehicles have decreased, the station remains in the top 30 for most prevalent crimes.
The broader crime landscape shows a 7.8% increase in other serious crimes across the Midrand area, securing the station a concerning third place nationally and second provincially.
Furthermore, commercial crime has escalated by 8%, positioning Midrand as second to Sandton, both nationally and provincially.
Shoplifting figures remain unchanged from the previous year at 78 arrests, reflecting the ongoing challenges businesses face in protecting their asset.
