GDE promises to deploy mobile classrooms at Kaalfontein Primary to address overcrowding
Despite some progress, the school still faces challenges with sanitation and access to digital learning tools.
Kaalfontein Primary School has been facing a pressing challenge that affects students, teachers, and the overall quality of education — overcrowding.
Despite the school’s dedicated efforts, inadequate infrastructure continues to hinder its ability to provide quality education.

However, the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) is taking steps to address the situation before the start of Term 3. Recognising the urgency, the GDE has announced plans to deploy three mobile classrooms before the new term begins.
GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona mentioned that a maintenance inspection conducted at Kaalfontein Primary in June 2025 identified several areas in need of repair. While some issues are being resolved, upgrades to sanitation facilities and the replacement of vandalised toilets are currently in progress.
“Additionally, two prefab classrooms, which previously lacked stairs and electricity, are now fully operational. Improvements in sanitation and enhanced digital learning resources remain priority areas, pending procurement and budget alignment,” said Mabona.

He also noted that Kaalfontein Primary is not currently included in the LAN/Wi-Fi rollout under Phase 3 of the Gauteng Broadband Network (GBN). However, temporary solutions, such as Huawei hotspot routers, are in place, with plans for future inclusion based on readiness and funding availability.
