Triumph of rising chess stars sets tone for Midrand tournament

The first and third placing for Repson Munhanga and Arham Khalife, in their respective categories at the JMC Closed Tournament, will see them, in all likelihood, gaining seats to compete at the inter-regional level.

As the Midrand Chess Club players gear up for the highly anticipated Midrand Open and Juniors Rapid Tournament, they are also making strides in their competitive careers.

Repson Munhanga (17) and Arham Khalife (14) delivered impressive performances, securing first and third place in the U18 and U14 categories, respectively, at the Johannesburg Metro Chess (JMC) Closed Tournament held on August 9 and 10.

This closed tournament was a crucial event designed to select the elite squad that will represent JMC at the inter-regional level, with the potential to advance to the Gauteng team.

While both Repson and Arham excelled in this tournament, the final seating for the inter-regional competition has not yet been confirmed. The players must compete vigorously within their respective regions to secure top positions for representation.

JMC oversees the governance and administration of chess in the Johannesburg Metropole, operating under the auspices of Chess South Africa. The organisation is responsible for hosting key tournaments and co-ordinating team selections for regional competitions.

Kgosimang Molefe, Midrand Chess Club coach and JMC executive committee junior representative, emphasised the club’s pride in its players. “It’s an impressive feat for them to reach this level. Although the inter-regional seating has not been finalised, both Repson and Arham have demonstrated exceptional skill, and are strong contenders for their sections. They must continue to perform in their regions to secure their spots.”

The Midrand Open and Junior Rapid Tournament will feature sections from U8 to U18, alongside an open section accessible to all participants. Registration for the junior sections will be free, while the open section will likely require a fee, due to the prize money involved.

Last year’s event, held in Alexandra, attracted over 80 participants. This year, the club is set on accommodating over 100 players. “The tournament dates are confirmed. However, we are finalising details with sponsors, and the official announcement will be released soon,” Molefe added.
