Midrand entrepreneur Connie Matlejoane lanches Leruo Foundation to empower SA’s women and youth entrepreneurs
After being retrenched, Matlejoane took a bold step to start her own business, to support her family and contribute to local economic growth by creating employment opportunities in her community.
As the world celebrated Women’s Day and reflected on the progress and challenges faced by women, Midrand entrepreneur Connie Matlejoane, CEO of CRM Enterprise, launched the Leruo Foundation.
This non-profit organisation aims to support women entrepreneurs, young business leaders, and branding experts in South Africa by breaking down barriers, providing mentorship, and creating opportunities for community-based entrepreneurs.
Matlejoane noted that while only 38% of SMEs in the country were women-led, female entrepreneurship was growing, particularly in retail, technology, and social enterprises. However, several hurdles limit their expansion potential.

“The reality is that women entrepreneurs don’t just need motivation, they need access to capital, networks, and knowledge that directly support their business growth,” said Matlejoane.
Having received support through various business programmes when she started CRM Enterprise, Matlejoane is committed to helping fellow entrepreneurs access similar opportunities.
“This foundation is about creating a movement where local business owners uplift each other, share resources and insights, and build sustainable success together.”

After being retrenched, Matlejoane founded her business to support her family and contribute to local economic growth by creating jobs in her community. What began with just a desk, laptop, and cellphone has evolved into a successful enterprise.
Youth entrepreneurship is also on the rise as young South Africans turn to business ownership amid high unemployment rates. The foundation acknowledges the potential of these emerging entrepreneurs while recognising their struggles with mentorship, funding, and business knowledge.
“’Youthpreneurs’ are the future of entrepreneurship, and by supporting and empowering them, we can foster the next generation of business leaders, innovators, and problem solvers who will reshape industries and create positive change in society.”

The foundation’s inaugural event, the Youthpreneurs Summit, will be held on June 16, bringing together young business leaders, entrepreneurs, and changemakers to discuss innovation, inclusion, and the future of youth-driven enterprises in South Africa. Additionally, a Women’s CEO breakfast is planned for August.
