Leadership instability plunged Joburg to the state of decay – MMC

City's Finance MMC Margaret Arnolds believes the recent leadership was on the right track to restore the 'City of Gold' status.

City of Joburg Finance MMC Margaret Arnolds believes revenue collection is critical in addressing the state of decay in the city.

Arnolds spoke to Midrand Reporter after an Integrated Development Planning (IDP) session for Region A at the Midrand Fire Station.

“I want to emphasise that revenue collection is important so that we can deliver service to everybody across the board. If you can pay, let’s pay. But we are also dealing with billing issues as well,” said Arnolds.

Asked what actions, if any, would be taken against residents who did not pay their monthly municipal bills, Arnold urged those who were struggling to pay a visit her office to find amicable solutions.

Arnolds, who has served as Speaker of Council, was asked how the city was going to address the decay.

“One, stability in government has to be there. And now we are finding our feet and getting stable. The other issue is that we never had a disciplinary board to deal with [corrupt officials within the city]. Now, we have a disciplinary board, and those who are found in the wrong will be dealt with accordingly.”

She said the Government of National Unity was working towards addressing all these issues.
