Social media entrepreneur uses construction skills to fight unemployment in Midrand

As South Africa's unemployment crisis continues to affect millions, Midrand entrepreneur Liffty ‘Mr Matt’ Bvuma is equipping young people and women with practical construction skills through his 32 Acts of Impact campaign.

As cranes rise and new developments reshape Midrand’s skyline, one local entrepreneur is ensuring that community upliftment grows alongside the area’s booming construction sector.

Known to thousands on social media, Matimba Liffty ‘Mr Matt’ Bvuma has built a reputation as a successful construction consultant, entrepreneur, and mentor.

Now, the founder and CEO of Safe Secure Reliable Holdings (SSL) is using a personal and business milestone to empower unemployed youth and women through practical skills development.

Born in Palaborwa, Bvuma launched the company’s 32 Years of Grace, 10 Years in Business, 32 Days of Giving Back campaign in early June.

The initiative forms part of the company’s first major empowerment programme, focused on equipping community members with skills that can open doors within South Africa’s construction industry.

The campaign combines skills development, mentorship, and community outreach under the banner of the 32 Acts of Impact campaign, a community-driven initiative centred on kindness, empowerment, and hope. “We are grateful for the grace that has carried us through 32 years of life and 10 years in business. As we celebrate these milestones, our desire is to be a blessing to others.”

“What started as a journey of purpose, resilience, and faith has grown into a movement dedicated to impacting lives and building stronger communities.”

Bvuma is widely recognised on social media platforms where he regularly shares construction advice, project updates, and business mentorship content. Behind the online presence, however, is a decade-long career in construction.

A graduate of the University of Pretoria, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Actuarial Science, Bvuma has spent more than 10 years managing residential and commercial construction projects.

Despite his academic background, he found his calling in an industry far removed from the one he originally studied.

“So many people are unemployed and struggling to find opportunities. I never studied construction myself. My qualification is in actuarial science, yet I found myself working in the construction industry for the past 10 years. It shows that, with the right mindset and opportunity, people can succeed in fields they never imagined.”

The campaign’s flagship programme focuses on training unemployed youth and women in practical construction skills, including bricklaying and basic building techniques. Participants receive classroom-based construction knowledge, practical on-site experience, hands-on industry exposure, mentorship and guidance from experienced professionals, and certificates upon completion of the programme.

“It is an opportunity to equip the next generation with practical skills, knowledge, exposure, and confidence to enter and grow within the building and construction industry.”

Bvuma’s vision, he added, is rooted in the belief that business success should create opportunities for others.

“Every company is built on vision, leadership, and purpose. My leadership is driven by a simple belief that success should create opportunities for others. This campaign reflects that vision by investing in communities through skills development, education, and empowerment.”

The initiative comes at a time when South Africa continues to face significant unemployment challenges, particularly among young people.

According to Statistics South Africa’s latest labour force survey, the country’s official unemployment rate remains above 30%, while youth unemployment remains substantially higher, highlighting the urgent need for skills development and employment pathways.
