Recently there have been incidents that have made me and other residents feel we are being exploited.
We also feel that all the decisions made in the complex only benefit the owners and the Body Corporate members.
We had our electricity system changed not long ago. Previously we had a system where residents would go into a store and buy a prepaid electricity voucher and get the electricity units based on the amount of money spent.
The new system is basically stealing from tenants. Basically how the new system works is that I go to a supermarket and buy R500 worth of electricity.
I will be given a voucher number that I send via SMS to a number printed on the voucher. Then I will get a response with the pin number to recharge on my meter.
This is where we are being exploited. If I buy for R500, I get charged a debt charge of R127.00 and Vat of R41, and 10 percent goes to the vendor. From the R500 I will only get 297 units.
Why does the tenant have to pay so many charges each month? As far as I am aware this is the only complex that does this in Midrand and it’s a rip- off.
