Cricket club starts season on a high

MIDRAND - Midrand Cricket Club officially kicked off the season in October when all three sides played matches.

On 5 October, the club’s first side, which plays in the Gauteng Cricket Board’s SA5 league, earned full points as their opposition, the Sandton Cricket Club, withdrew from the game.

The club’s second side, which plays in the SA8 league, hosted Pirates Cricket Club at their home-ground in Olifantsfontein. The Midrand club gave a thorough cricket lesson to the opposition, as they won by 152 runs.

In the game Midrand Cricket Club batted first and posted 278 with Lesley Govender top-scoring with a 96 that fell just short of the season’s first century. He was ably supported by Lesley Geswind who chipped in with an invaluable 55.

The visitors were bundled out for 126 with the chief destroyers being Rishen Maharaj, who took three wickets for 19 in six overs, and Guru Bavirisetti, who took three wickets for 24 in five overs.

On 6 October, the SU5 side hosted Alberton Cricket Club and while they fought hard, they missed a win by a margin.
