Knights remain unbeaten

MIDRAND - Midrand Knights Cricket Club's first team defeated Azad Swaraj Sporting by 30 runs, in Lenasia.

The hosts won the toss, and elected to bowl first, and it was a daunting task facing a team that is second on the log, in their own backyard, in bowler-friendly conditions and under an overcast sky.

The Knights captain, Jeremy Meiring and Sathya Prasad opened the batting for Midrand Knights, and had to navigate a difficult first six overs as the Azad Swaraj bowlers were on the money with accurate bowling.

The openers put on a solid partnership of 74 runs in 15 overs, when Prasad was dismissed for 28, while Meiring ended up scoring his first half ton of the season (59).

Midrand Knights put on a stellar performance, and scored 210 all out on a 190-par wicket where there were solid performances by Santosh Raichetti (42) and Shumail Ahmed (19). Knights bowlers grabbed the bull by horns early on, and took control from ball one.

The pressure was on, and the opposition were bowled out for 180 in 36.2 overs.

Shumail Ahmed, Vamshi Vure and Suman Choudary were on top form.

After the match, Meiring said Midrand Knights’ first team should move from fourth to second place on the Saturday 7 league log.

Midrand Knights second team’s Saturday 8 fixture against Heidelberg Cricket Club did not take place after the Heidelberg club forfeited the match due to a lack of players.

Meiring said the Midrand Knights team was therefore handed the victory on a silver platter, and would cement their first place on the log.
