Knights’ first team on winning streak

MIDRAND - Midrand Knights Cricket Club's first team played against Pirates Cricket Club at Halfway House Primary in the SA7 league.

Knights won the toss and elected to bat. The match was delayed for 35 minutes due to rain, and was subsequently shortened to 35 overs a side.

It was very difficult to bat on a wet Astro wicket, and Knights did well to post 176/9, thanks to an unbeaten 53 from vice-captain Krishna Prasad and a well-constructed 38 by Shumail Ahmed.

Pirates’ innings was aided by a dry Astro, as well as clear skies as the weather eased up. That didn’t deter the Knights’ impressive bowling line-up, as Pirates were bowled out for 120 runs in 30 overs.

Special mention to Krishna Prasad, three wickets for 20 runs in six overs, and Pradeep Kumar, two wickets for 23 runs in five overs.

Knights won by 56 runs, and are currently second on the log.

Knights’ second team took on Crescents Cricket Club in Lenasia. Knights posted 221 all out, with excellent contributions from Harsha Vayyassi and Amar Jamulla.

The Crescents Cricket Club innings was earmarked by a controversial addition of 30 penalty runs to their score, after they ended up on 191 wickets for eight runs in 37 overs. The penalty runs were awarded because Knights could finish their 40 overs before close of play at 6pm. The game was subsequently a draw. This was controversial on Crescents’ part, as they didn’t take into account that 30 minutes was lost in Knights’ bowling innings, due to attention that was given to an injured player. The target, as well as the number of overs, should have been revised, and that would have led to a victory to Midrand Knights.

Jeremy Meiring of the Knights took up the matter with the Gauteng Cricket Board, and is waiting for a response.
