Blue Valley hosts SA Senior Open Champioships

BLUE VALLEY - Blue Valley Golf and Country Club in Midrand hosted a prestigious golf tournament.

The 2013 South Africa Senior Open Championship was won by Hendrik Buhrmann who received a trophy and cheque of R15 000.

Burhmann’s total score was 12 under par, while second placed Chris Williams was two shots behind.

Buhrmann, who was excited to have taken first place said, “It is an honour to win, I have played with good golfers and they each inspire me.”

He has been playing golf professionally since 1985.

The SA Senior Open Championship saw 90 players, both professional and amateur, taking part from 1 to 4 December.

Twenty five amateurs participated and 16 finished the tournament. The leading amateur, Steven Williams, walked away with a silver medal, and second place went to Mellette Hendrikse, winner of the bronze medal.

The top five professional player winners were Buhrmann, Chris Williams, Kevin Spurgeon, Bobby Lincoln and John Bland.

The tournament was open to all senior professional golfers and amateurs over 50 years of age. Jeff Hawkes, Neville Clarke, John Mashego and Bobby Lincoln were amongst many well-known golfers.

Tournament director, Pat Lowth said the tournament is a flagship event where amateur and professional players can enter the event. “All amateurs who entered have a handicap of four and better.”

Lowth added that, for professional players, the tournament is an order of merit event which carries merit points. “The order of merit winner will participate in the European Senior Tour qualifier school in UK.
