Shumbashaba’s special olympics unifies athletes

MIDRAND - Shumbashaba and Special Olympics South Africa held their Unified Sports Day at the Shumbashaba Stables outside Diepsloot.

The Unified Sports Day brought together people from all walks of life, each with their own unique challenges but united in the commitment to share in the spirit of good sportsmanship.

The athletes took centre stage competing in bocce, a ball game similar to bowls, volleyball, 7-aside soccer and equestrian.

The sports day integrates people with and without disabilities, all sharing the field on the same day.

The event was open to all and would not be possible without the help of sponsors and volunteers.

Jacky du Plessis of Shumbashaba explained that many participants have competed in all three events that have been held at Shumbashaba.

Their passion and enthusiasm for their chosen game knows no bounds, if the intensity with which they played is anything to go by.

“Our hearts lifted with each attempt to win a goal, score a point or complete an obstacle, ” she said.
